Crochet Top Hat

Did someone say Top Hat? This crochet top hat will keep you warm all winter long, and keep you looking quite dashing as it does! This pattern is available for free, below, or an Ad Free PDF can be purchased (purchasing a PDF helps me keep bringing you more awesome patterns like this one, by the way!)

I love this hat, but it’s got a few stitches that beginner crocheters may have a bit of difficulty with. It starts with a magic circle, and increases in each round, to create the top of the hat. To keep the top flat, and have the sides go straight down, with a nice corner between them, I’ve used back loop only single crochet.

Once the hat is as tall as you want it, we need to make the brim. Which needs to not only have increases, but also has to come back out flat from the sides of the hat, so I used front loop only single crochet, with increases in the front loop only.

I would say that if you’re interested in making this pattern, it would be best if you were at least an advanced beginner crocheter. However, if you are a true beginner, and want to give it a go (because hello, this is super cute), make sure you follow me on Facebook or join my Facebook Group, so I can help answer any questions you may have!

Optional Ribbon

You can wrap a ribbon around the base of the hat, just above the brim, to give a more finished look to your Crochet Top Hat.  Remember that crochet hats stretch when you put them on, so if you are putting a ribbon around your hat, make sure there is room for the hat to stretch to fit your head!

  1. Will this pattern fit an adult or is it a kids pattern? It does not say how big a head it will fit, and I hate to crochet this and end up with something I can’t use.

    1. It will fit an adult, or an older child/teen. The pattern can be made larger by continuing to add rounds with increases to the top of the hat, when you’re first beginning. If you need me to help with that, I can. Just let me know!
